And I still find it rather annoying that Morimoto has no interest in proper ECE or SAE compliance for their projectors. They love using excessive foreground illumination which blinds everybody at night but pointed at a garage wall it looks super bright. In practice it reduces your night vision because your eye adjusts to the foreground brightness but things down the road aren't bright enough either. They've been asked about foreground limiting before and their engineers respond with "market has no interest in this".

I have a set of series 3 HIDs I converted to LHD but I am still curious to see how these turn out.jho96https://www.blogger.com/profile/10956262229436369648noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026458778495935571.post-30702281971712747352024-02-06T12:33:25.823+09:002024-02-06T12:33:25.823+09:00Thank you for replying Aki!

The Boost gauge wasn't reading correctly and oddly enough would mirror what the torque-split gauge was reading. It was almost as if, they were the same meter and shared the same signal with the only difference being the faceplates (only way I could explain it). After a lot of troubleshooting and hair pulling, I changed swapped the sub meter circuit board from my oem meters and it did the trick. The other issue was with the speedometer. One day the odometer stopped working. Luckily that was a pretty simple fix, the motor that drives the odometer went and I just had to pull it apart and replace it.

These cars are a labor of love! If you're interested, we could exchange emails and maybe I can help you get your sub meters up and going!
Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16401579398238647783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026458778495935571.post-19203896913775271392024-02-06T11:01:02.040+09:002024-02-06T11:01:02.040+09:00Hi James,

The same kind of complaints on prices - some legit, others not so much. And then some people choosing to use cheaper substandard /knock-off parts for their cars. Many people realized that in many cases, buying such cheaper parts was a false economy, not only in performance and quality (e.g. the "Mishimoto" brand intercoolers SOUND Japanese but are not, and I think I recall seeing how the performance was worse than the legit brands that had been around for a while - not sure if they have improved since but; another one are the replica wheels made by ROTA - cast, not forged, and also heavier than OEM so more strain on the car/suspension that was not designed for such heavy wheels.... but to each his own), but also in that their cars did not hold the same value as those cars outfitted with higher spec components.

Now of course, some good parts ARE way overpriced. But what this means simply is that many times these cars with such parts are recognized as the best, because if the owner is either rich enough or patient enough to save up for such parts, then it implies that the cars are also very well taken care of. (Brand premium effect). But again, there are plenty of good parts at good prices, even if not a famous brand.

In the end however, it is not my business to tell people what they should do with their cars, and the beauty of the free economy is that you can buy or not buy whatever you want, and the beauty of free speech is that you are free to express your opinion on this topic, so long as you are respectful in doing so, I hope.Akihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13586596582322556131noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026458778495935571.post-90704938102872084012024-02-05T15:42:26.755+09:002024-02-05T15:42:26.755+09:00I left my contact on the site and can't wait t...I left my contact on the site and can't wait to be able to order them!!!Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00756231398846735466noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026458778495935571.post-83262783062930324122024-02-05T15:40:23.750+09:002024-02-05T15:40:23.750+09:00As mentioned in the article, "those who are c...As mentioned in the article, "those who are complaining about the price being too high, are either new GT-R owners or non-owners." The market price for used OEM S3 headlights start around $5,000 and $10,000 each for new ones. As for retrofit kits in the US, I'm pretty sure you can't beat the quality of a purpose-built units. The advantage for US buyers is the strong USD to Yen rate, which will put the price of these units at around $3500. The demographics for these units are folks like me who treasure our R33's and want to maintain our cars with the highest quality parts available.Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00756231398846735466noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026458778495935571.post-48155525260160650152024-02-05T13:25:24.360+09:002024-02-05T13:25:24.360+09:00I think they are way over priced. Last year I imported my dream R33 GTR and I've used your experiences to really hone in my vision for my car. I can't begin to express how much I appreciate all the information you've provided!

That being said, like you I'm a huge fan of Mine's (started by the original Mine's R33 in the first Gran Turismo) and I was able to find all 3 sub meters and Speed meter by Mine's, but I'm having doubts about their authenticity. You wouldn't happen to have and pictures of your sub meters before you installed them? Specifically any identifying numbers on the faceplate or casing that houses the circuit board and motor, anything that might rule out reproductions.

Apologies for the long post and thank you again for this encyclopedia of information you've shared with us all!

JamesAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026458778495935571.post-83508869423656428802023-12-30T14:00:04.976+09:002023-12-30T14:00:04.976+09:00Wouldn't taking the dash out make it easier?Wouldn't taking the dash out make it easier?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026458778495935571.post-86618129524419078412023-12-18T13:17:18.674+09:002023-12-18T13:17:18.674+09:00Regarding Consult: You won't be able to commun...Regarding Consult: You won't be able to communicate with the engine controller anymore to pull Consult data. However I'm pretty sure you can still talk to the remaining modules connected to the Consult port. So ATTESA, ABS, Airbag, HICAS, etc. I have to try this for myself though, this is just my best guess based on seeing how the protocol works and reading over the wiring diagrams. For the ECU specifically you can just plug in a USB cable and use the aftermarket ECU software to pull logs and all the same things you would normally do with Consult. In theory it is possible for an aftermarket ECU to implement the Consult protocol, in practice they can't be bothered.

Actually, one of the main barriers I think to adoption of ECUs like Link, Haltech, Motec, etc in Japan is probably a combination of poor JP language support and the primary supported load sensing being alpha-N on the RB26. These ECUs really want to use speed density, but the RB26 being an ITB + turbos means it doesn't really work. If you look at the manifold gauge a good amount of the gas pedal travel is narrowly concentrated around 1 atmosphere of pressure. To get around that issue they use throttle position sensing instead. This nominally works when combined with boost compensation (2 atm of pressure -> 2x fuel for same throttle position) but in practice it is a very, very brittle setup that requires a lot of compensation tables to reduce open loop error. Most likely bad memories of PowerFC D-Jetro as well are part of it.

I am currently working on fully replicating the OEM R33 GTR ECU map for Haltech NSP, if you are curious to see what that looks like I can email you about it in the future once I feel confident sharing what I have. Haltech has support for the dual MAF setup of the RB26 and contains support for MAF load which is more annoying to set up correctly due to lack of calibration data but once that is all loaded into the software it should be easier to work with and yield a better tune in the end.jho96https://www.blogger.com/profile/10956262229436369648noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026458778495935571.post-51570807488113787732023-12-18T13:14:22.028+09:002023-12-18T13:14:22.028+09:00This comment has been removed by the author.jho96https://www.blogger.com/profile/10956262229436369648noreply@blogger.com
